From Pop and Rock, to Orchestral Snare Drum, Doumbek and diverse styles on the drum set, Gavyn will have you reading your favourite musical styles with ease. Complete musical transcriptions or charts, and an emphasis on music theory while studying the drums will help each student to build confidence in becoming independent musicians.
Gavyn Holt is a professional drummer from Barrie, Ontario. Gavyn’s recent musical performance endeavours come from the high seas, working with several cruise lines as a show-band drummer, most consistently with Holland America Line from 2012 to 2017, and acting as the band leader for “The Band” during 2016-2017. Gavyn also completed shorter contracts with other cruise lines such as Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Lines. Each show-band employed various instrumentations, ranging from small 3-piece ballroom dance jazz trios, up to the traditional show-band format of 10 musicians with 6 horns for onboard theatre productions.
Coming from a background of classical music and orchestral percussion, Gavyn’s influences are unique and diverse. Before attending university, Gavyn achieved a grade 8 percussion certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), and now holds a Bachelor of Music Degree with Honors in Orchestral Performance of percussion instruments from The University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. During his studies at UWO, he received extensive training in Big Band Jazz, Combo Jazz, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestral, and Percussion Ensemble repertoire with various performance programs under the direction of UWO’s knowledgeable faculty.
In the recent years, Gavyn has discovered a passion for teaching both languages and music, and has recently returned from Tokyo, Japan from spending over a year studying Japanese abroad at ARC Tokyo Japanese Language School while working as both an instructor of English and teaching private drum lessons.
As an instructor, Gavyn is passionate about teaching students with an emphasis on nurturing reading abilities of musical notation, understanding musical theory, and musical transcription alongside learning the drums. Gavyn is excited to teach many musical styles including current and past Rock, Pop, Jazz, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Funk, among others.
Before embarking to work on cruise ships and study abroad in Japan, Gavyn has been involved in a wide variety of musical projects in Southwest Ontario, which included The Newsmen, The Barriers, The Flat Five Jazz Quintet as a drummer and, as a doumbek player, The Light of East Ensemble.
