John Allen has taught drum set and percussion professionally for over 15 years. He inspires his students to learn through encouraging a deep connection with the music that they are passionate about. Over the course of several lessons, by studying the nuances of their favourite songs, students will discover the role of the drum set in music. Music theory and reading will also often be integrated into the lessons to give the student a solid grasp on the big picture of contemporary music. John typically gears the material towards learning to play in a real-world live performance or studio setting. He believes this context is a critical factor in a student’s ability to develop fully on his/her musical instrument.
John is an experienced performer, educator and producer. For the last decade he has worked as a freelance drummer in Toronto, during this period he has toured with EMI recording artists The Mudmen, Pop/Country artist Tonya Kennedy and recorded/performed with many others. The diversity of his performance experience combined personal study with world-class drummers Dave Weckl, Dave Langguth, Vito Rezza, and Paul DeLong has given him significant insight into a broad spectrum of musical genres and approaches to technique. As a producer/beatmaker his work has been featured on various Canadian Pop/Hit FM Radio stations, as well as Christian Radio.
