Canadian Mezzo-soprano Melissa Peiou is a classically trained opera singer who has an innate passion for performing and has a compassionate and gentle approach to teaching.

Mezzo-soprano Melissa Peiou is developing an enviable reputation as a creative and imaginative young artist on the opera and concert stage. Ms Peiou was recently the winner of the Metropolitan Opera Competition for the Buffalo/Toronto District Region and was a Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Her flexible, agile voice and detailed embodiment of her characters have led to performances that have been praised by critics and audiences alike. In her performance of Annina in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, Musical Toronto stated: the “Baron Ochs…was well partnered by mezzo Melissa Peiou as a saucy and lively Annina”. Likewise, Ms Peiou also appeared as the “lively and flirtatious” Nancy in Martha (National Capital Opera Society). Other performances include Carmen in Bizet’s Carmen, Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Nancy in Albert Herring by Benjamin Britten, Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina, and Gianetta in Donzietti’s L’Elisir d’amore.

She has obtained her Masters in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto and her undergraduate degree in Music Education from Western University.

Aside from performing, Melissa Peiou is an exceptional educator. She is passionate about sharing her professional experiences and knowledge with her students because she truly cares about their success and development. She wants everybody to know that despite the hard work and dedication in learning music, one must keep persevering if they want to accomplish their goals.

The skills that she teaches are transferable to other discipline areas (i.e. self-regulated learning, perseverance, dedication, etc.). She is a strong believer in enjoying the process of learning and uses her enthusiasm to make her music lessons positive and encouraging! Ms Peiou wants her students to have fun and enjoy the storytelling aspect associated with music performance.

Typical lessons may include the following activities: warm-up, technique building, repertoire development, character development, theory exercises, etc. Melissa Peiou is trained in knowing how to teach a wide variety of styles including opera, musical theatre, jazz, and pop. She will continue to work with students to establish common needs when finding appropriate repertoire for them, ultimately demonstrating her flexible and committed approach to student learning.
