With over 25 years of experience in music education, Josh has developed a personalized teaching approach that supports students at different stages of their musical journey. Whether working with beginners, developing musicians, or more experienced players, he adapts his guitar, bass, and ukulele lessons to each student’s abilities, musical interests, and individual goals.
Josh combines strong musical foundations, practical playing skills, and creative exploration to make learning both enjoyable and rewarding. His lessons balance encouragement with appropriate challenges, helping students improve their technique, develop confidence, and build the skills needed to become more independent musicians.
Alongside his teaching career, Josh has built extensive experience as a professional guitarist, touring musician, and recording artist. Originally from Winnipeg, he began playing drums at the age of three and guitar at seven. His early musical development included studying with respected musicians such as Daveid Letkeman, Bill Wallace of The Guess Who, and Murray Pulver, known for his work with Crash Test Dummies and Doc Walker.
Josh earned a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from Brandon University’s School of Music before moving to Toronto to pursue his professional music career. He has since performed, toured, and recorded with artists including Julian Taylor and Irene Torres. This real-world experience allows Josh to bring valuable insights into musicianship, collaboration, live performance, and recording to his students, helping them develop skills that extend beyond the practice room.
For Josh, music education goes beyond learning chords, scales, and songs. With over 25 years of teaching experience, he understands that learning an instrument can also help students develop valuable life skills, including discipline, patience, perseverance, creativity, and self-confidence. His approach emphasizes mentorship, helping students recognize their potential while developing a positive relationship with music.
Josh believes that the right balance of encouragement and challenge helps students grow both as musicians and individuals. By creating a supportive learning environment and adapting lessons to each student’s personality, interests, and abilities, he encourages students to overcome challenges, celebrate their progress, and develop greater independence. His goal is not simply to teach students how to play an instrument, but to help them build confidence and skills that can benefit them throughout their lives.
One of the advantages of studying with Josh is his experience as a multi-instrumentalist, professional musician, and band teacher. Students can begin with guitar, bass, or ukulele and, as their musical interests develop, explore additional instruments, songwriting, music composition, and band performance with the guidance of the same experienced teacher.
For students interested in writing original songs, arranging music, or learning how to lead and direct a band, Josh’s background in professional performance and collaborative music-making provides valuable opportunities to develop these skills. Rather than searching for a different teacher whenever their musical interests expand, students can benefit from continuity, personalized guidance, and a teacher who already understands their strengths, interests, and musical goals.
Whether a student wants to learn a second instrument, develop original music, or gain confidence performing with other musicians, Josh can help them explore new musical directions while continuing to strengthen their foundational skills. His approach encourages students to see music as more than an individual instrument, helping them develop into versatile, creative, and confident musicians.

Learning an instrument often begins with tremendous excitement. In the early stages, students are constantly discovering something new, and progress can feel fast. A new chord, song, technique, or musical concept may bring an immediate sense of accomplishment.
As students become more advanced, the skills they are developing naturally become more challenging and take longer to master. Progress has not stopped—it simply becomes less immediately noticeable. For some students, this can gradually lead to a loss of motivation.
Our band programs are designed to help change that.
Students have the opportunity to meet other musicians in their age group who share similar musical interests, rehearse together, and work toward live performances. Music becomes a social and collaborative experience, bringing renewed excitement and motivation to their musical development.
More importantly, playing in a band gives direction and purpose to private lessons. A challenging technique is no longer something students practise simply because it appears in a method book. It becomes a skill they need to master for a song their band wants to perform, an arrangement they are developing, or an upcoming performance.
As both a private guitar, bass, and ukulele teacher and one of our band program teachers, Josh can help students connect what they learn individually with the practical experience of playing alongside other musicians. Students interested in songwriting, arranging music, forming a band, or developing leadership skills can also benefit from his guidance.
Students can further develop their musical interests through our Band Programs, Adult Jam Sessions, Open Mic events, and Summer Music Camps, where applicable.
Private lessons develop individual skills, while playing with others gives students a reason to use them. Together, these experiences can create renewed excitement, greater motivation, lasting friendships, and the confidence to perform in front of an audience.
