Songwriting Lessons

Our approach to songwriting sets us apart from other schools in Toronto. Our instructors are experienced and knowledgeable, providing personalized lessons that cater to each student’s individual needs and goals. With a team of exceptional teachers, you can trust that you will receive outstanding education and experience that will elevate your songwriting abilities to new heights.

Class Experience

Our songwriting course is designed to provide a comprehensive education in the craft of writing music and lyrics. Through a structured five-day program, we will guide students through the development of the essential building blocks of songwriting, including rhythm, rhyme, melody, and harmony. By the end of the course, every student will have written two fully completed original songs, including both a solo piece and a collaborative group effort, demonstrating their newfound abilities and creative expression.

In our songwriting course, a basic understanding of the keyboard and chords is beneficial for maximum participation and understanding. Access to a keyboard is suggested, but if you are proficient on another instrument such as the guitar or ukulele, rest assured that our teaching style accommodates all students. For those without any instrument proficiency, we offer alternative methods such as working with “LOOPS” to ensure every student can fully engage and benefit from the course.

Course Breakdown

Day 1:

We will go over the different sections of the song, including the verse, the chorus, and the bridge, and the role that each plays in the song. I will also teach the students how to do an object write. They will complete an object write and create a short song section for homework to present in the next class.

Day 2:

We will discuss writing chord progressions and melodies. Students will learn a few common chord progressions and how to construct a melody that is singable and compliments their lyrics. We will also go over the homework and talk about developing our songs. Homework will be to write another song section to develop.

Day 3:

We will talk about different types of rhymes and rhyme schemes, and how to use them in our songs. We will also discuss how to vary line lengths to make our songs more interesting. Students will continue working on their songs for homework.

Day 4:

We will discuss writing song sections with a central metaphor and do a fun exercise to practice. We will start to finish up and fine tune our songs, and I will answer any questions the students have concerning their final songs. Students will finish their songs for homework.

Day 5:

Final touches and performance week! Each student will present their final song to the class, either playing live or sharing an MP3 recording. We will all give everyone some positive feedback on their songs and we’ll end the class on a high note!

I have had the privilege of teaching guitar lessons and rock band classes at Elite Music Academy and being a rock camp instructor at Toronto Music Camp since 2008. Elite is a great place to work. The owners are friendly and supportive. The staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. The other instructors are top notch professionals who are a joy to work with. I can't say enough about the talented students I have had at Elite over the years. Their eagerness to learn, and the interaction I have with them, has been very motivating and inspiring for me. I hope to be a part of the great team at Elite for many more years.Todd Lefever

Love This place. It has 2 great owners and many wonderful teachers who will teach you everything you need to know about your instrument. it has many great programs such as rock which is run during the year and the Toronto Music Camp which is run in the summer for 5 weeks and is one of my favourite programs the school has. I have been with the school for lessons, rock band and the Toronto Music Camp for about 4 years and i love it. Elite Music Academy is one of the best music schools in Toronto and it always will be. i recommend this place to anyone who wants to take music lessons.

My daughter took piano and voice lessons at Elite and attended their Toronto Music Camp for two summers. She loved her teachers and has passed her RCM exams rather quickly. Her teachers mixed the lessons with classical training and pop music to keep it interesting while still providing a solid music foundation. Their store is warm and welcoming; the owners obviously have a passion for what they do. I also loved how they got the kids performing out in the community and recording their music. Seeing my daughter finally perform on a professional stage made all the back and forth to lessons worth it.
