Hello! My name is Josheen, and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a specialization in classical piano at the University of Toronto. With a multifaceted background in both piano and voice, I am committed to designing lessons that are engaging, meaningful, and student-centered, tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each learner.
I began studying piano at the age of nine and have completed several Royal Conservatory of Music examinations in both practical piano and music theory. Throughout my childhood, I also participated and placed in annual Canadian Music League competitions, where I further grew as a young performer. In addition to classical training, I regularly serve as a cantor and accompanist at my church’s weekly services, an experience that has deepened my skills in live performance, collaboration, and adaptability. Together, these experiences have shaped my musicianship and reinforced my belief in the power of music to bring people together.
I have a diverse and extensive choral background, having been involved in choirs since the age of seven. I graduated from Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts, where I studied in the vocal program and performed in a wide range of concerts and productions throughout the academic year. At the university level, I have sung in both the Soprano-Alto Chorus and Chamber Choir, where I have had the opportunity to collaborate with ensembles such as the Toronto Children’s Chorus.
As a music educator, I believe that every student has the potential to form a personal connection to music. Whether they are just beginning or have years of experience, my goal is to help students discover the same passion for music that inspired me from a young age.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in a student-led approach, one that fosters holistic skills such as confidence, music appreciation, and self-expression, which students can carry with them beyond the walls of the classroom. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students are encouraged to explore and take an active role in their music journey.
Because of her background in both piano and voice, Josheen is a strong fit for students looking for piano & voice lessons in North York, including children, teens, and adults studying at beginner to advanced levels.
Students looking to focus primarily on either piano or voice lessons would benefit from her well-rounded musical background, while students interested in exploring both piano and voice may also appreciate the ability to study both disciplines with the same instructor as they continue developing their musical skills.
Prior to committing to further lessons, we encourage students and parents to begin with an introductory lesson so they can meet the teacher, discuss goals, and assess the student’s current level. During the introductory lesson, the teacher can also recommend lesson frequency, lesson length, and areas of focus moving forward.
To continue after your introductory lesson—or if you have any questions—please contact our scheduling team at [email protected]. Our team will be happy to assist you with ongoing lesson scheduling and availability.
Private piano and voice lessons are one of the best ways to develop strong musical foundations, improve technique, and build confidence as a musician. However, private lessons are often a more individual experience, especially for younger students. One recommendation we frequently make to students and parents is to consider incorporating a group class, ensemble, or performance-based program once the student’s ability and confidence level allow it. Over the years, we have consistently seen that introducing a collaborative group environment often increases motivation, rehearsal time, creativity, confidence, and overall excitement toward music.
For adult students interested in singing within a collaborative group setting, programs such as Elite Voices or our Adult Jam Sessions (18-35) and Adult Jam Sessions (35+) can be an excellent complement to private lessons depending on the student’s musical interests and goals. Students interested in performing contemporary music in a band setting may particularly enjoy the social and performance-based atmosphere of the Adult Jam Sessions program.
Younger students interested in singing or playing piano within a group environment may also benefit from our Band Programs, which are organized by age groups and experience levels to help students rehearse, collaborate, and perform alongside other musicians in a supportive setting. During the summer months, additional seasonal band programs and performance opportunities also become available.
